Allentown Symphony Association and Orchestra would like to extend an invitation to your school and students in Grades 2-8 to participate in an exciting curriculum and classical multimedia concert experience at historic Symphony Hall presenting Gustav Holst’s - The Planets. For the past 60 years, Allentown Symphony Orchestra has presented educational concerts for greater Lehigh Valley school-age children. Orchestra Maestra Diane Wittry, in collaboration with Dr. José Francisco Salgado of Chicago’s Adler Planetarium, suggests that you reserve your seating early for the four scheduled concerts.
 
Allentown Symphony Orchestra will offer students a galactic adventure through the solar system with Gustav Holst’s The Planets personally guided by astronomer, experimental photographer and visual artist Dr. Jose Francisco Salgado.   Dr. Salgado’s science and symphony films have been presented in more than 13 countries with orchestras such as The Boston Pops Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony and the Czech National Orchestra.  He was formally trained in Physics (University Of Puerto Rico) and Astronomy (PhD, University of Michigan) and uses his skills in astronomy, education and visual arts to create multimedia works that communicate science in engaging ways.   Dr. Salgado has produced and directed critically acclaimed, award-winning films which include awe-inspiring images, historical illustrations, NASA and European Space Agency animations and science visualizations.  Allentown Symphony Association (ASA) and Symphony Orchestra’s performances of Gustav Holst’s The Planetswill bring a highly dynamic symphonic adventure through space and a powerful masterwork of music to life, portraying the personalities of each planet in Earth’s solar system.  
 
Tickets are $6.00 with 1 free chaperone to every 10 students.
 
Dr. Salgado will guide our young audience through the educational concert. This multimedia experience will be offered with a complete standards-based teacher’s manual to support and enhance curriculum prepared by the Educational Advisory Committee of the Symphony Orchestra, representing educators and administrators from many schools throughout the greater Lehigh Valley. Our culturally rich educational and music based 2012 production will encompass music and musical terms, with an enhanced science and math component. The specially designed award winning video features the planets Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune from Holst’s original score.
 
Educational Concerts will be presented on the Symphony Hall stage on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 10:00 am & 12:00 noon and Monday, April 16, 2012 at 10:00 am & 12:00 noon. Pre-reserved ticket sales only ….please!
 
Each school reserving tickets for the concert will receive Youth Concert Teacher’s Manuals. Teacher’s Manuals will be delivered or mailed by mid January 2012. Teacher’s manuals contain interdisciplinary lesson plans, combining musical concepts with other subjects such as language arts, history and science. We encourage you to make your reservations as soon as possible by returning the attached reservation form to Destinee Deely at 23 N. 6th Street, Allentown, PA 18101-1431, or e-mailing ddeely@allentownsymphony.org.
